ENTRANCE FEES REDUCED

At a recent meeting, the Lutheran Haven Board of Trustees extended the entrance fee reduction deadline to the Retirement Center to June 30, 2011. The Board reduced the entrance fees by 8.8 percent. This is great news for people who are thinking about moving to Lutheran Haven whose home values have suffered a loss because of the turmoil in the real estate market. This special promotion means that a retirement cottage that was $141,475 is now $129,000 a savings of $12,475 or a cottage that was $118,650 is now $108,200 a $10,000+ savings. For more information about the reduced entrance fees call P.J. Summersgill at 1-800-272-5676.

PARTNERSHIP BRINGS GENERATIONS TOGETHER TO SHARE FAITH AND FUN!

Lutheran Haven and St. Luke's Lutheran Church and School have partnered for an Intergenerational (IG) Program engaging seniors and youth in events that promote learning, understanding, and faith between generations for over a year. The most recent event involved Senior Youth Group participants and Seniors from Lutheran Haven's Independent Living Community coming together to enhance the campus of Lutheran Haven.

Benches throughout the Haven campus were in need of refurbishment, so the group seized the opportunity to repaint the benches with Scripture themes. A committee of Haven residents selected Scripture verses they felt would be appropriate and submitted them to the students for interpretation. Dianne Stapleton, former set designer and artist at Universal Studios Orlando, currently teaching pre-school at St. Luke's, inspired the students to submit sketches of their Scripture interpretations to the Haven Committee prior to the painting event.

"When the subcommittee members saw the sketches for the first time the room can only be described as filled with the Holy Spirit", said Terri MacFarlane, IG Program Coordinator "You could see the common strength of faith displayed in the drawings."

The event on February 21, 2011 kicked off in the morning with introductions, devotions, and refreshment and then the fun began! Residents joined in to share insights with student participants and choose color schemes. Some even picked up a brush and helped with the backgrounds.

As the morning progressed, the Scriptures began to come to life! Some residents joined in to encourage the students and share stories of similar experiences, some painted their initials onto the benches as a show of support and participation.

With sublime Florida weather on the day of the event, there was a picnic down by a pond on the Haven campus after the painting was complete to celebrate the outcome and enjoy the beauty of God's creation.

11 benches remain to be painted that will be displayed, and enjoyed by many for years to come. As this IG program continues to strengthen our communities and break down barriers between ages and stereotypes, the Lord continues to bless those affected by it.

LUTHERAN HAVEN RESIDENT RECEIVES THE GOOD SAMARITAN AWARD

On February 20, 2011, Lutheran Services Florida honored several Orlando area Lutherans for their dedication to the Lord through volunteerism and service with their Fifth Annual Good Samaritan Awards Presentation. One of those recipients of this award was Gloria Heumann, a Lutheran Haven resident.

Since moving to the Lutheran Haven in 1995, Gloria has served as an organist for St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Oviedo, FL and also as one of the assistant organists for Redeemer Lutheran Church in Orlando.

Gloria was the primary caregiver for both her husband and mother during their long illnesses. But God has given Gloria the gift of never-tiring service to others, as well.

When she saw that there was a need for low-vision support, she gathered a group together for fellowship and support and that group continues to meet each month at the Haven.

She is Director of the Lutheran Haven Choir, directs the Haven's Golden Bell Ringers and Silver Chimers Choirs. She initiated "Munch 'n Music", a successful monthly program which includes a luncheon, followed by area musicians. The Haven's nursing home and assisted living facility residents also enjoy a monthly Community Sing-Along thanks to Gloria's efforts.

She also helped to establish GriefShare programs and serves as one of the facilitator, while also recruiting and training others in this ministry. Her compassion for those who have lost loved ones is evident as she continues to extend loving care to individuals long after the GriefShare sessions are over.

After receiving her award Gloria thanked everyone with the following: Receiving the Good Samaritan Award has been very emotional for me-it is a humbling experience. My heartfelt thanks to all of the folks who attended the dinner and to those who have given me congratulations. All of us together are Good Samaritans, and I pray that we'll do an even better job of loving and serving our wonderful Savior and His people in our community each day.

That's our Gloria - thanking others and giving all the glory to God!!

THE VILLAGE SHOPPE - CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

The "Haven Village Shoppe" opened for business during the month of March 1981. The building which the Shoppe now occupies formerly housed the Administration Offices of the Haven and sat vacant for some time. Several women mentioned that it would make a nice little shop and the idea grew. The Haven Board gave its permission to use the building for that purpose.

A committee solicited funds from the residents to finance the cost of renovating the building and volunteers took over the job of changing the building into a shop.

The purpose of the Shoppe was to be of assistance to the Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility, and to use the talents of the residents of Lutheran Haven Retirement cottages to operate and maintain the facility.

In the early years profits came mostly from Boutique sales (handmade items) and plants, also interest from monies invested. Slowly change took place and now the main source of income comes from thrift items, jewelry and greeting cards. All greeting cards sell for $1.00 a card.

Each afternoon "Havenites" - always two, are on duty. The Shoppe is operated entirely by volunteers and along with "behind the scenes" volunteers, we number 75 - 80.

The Lord prospers our work and over the 30 years, we have been able to make contributions to the Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility totaling $400,000!! These monies have gone for everything from mops and buckets to benevolent care and construction of the new Nursing Home and Assisted Living Facility.

We would like to thank the volunteers who do their own projects at home making the Shoppe a "special place."
--> How does Mary's garden grow? Mary, a Haven resident, has been in charge of the plant sales since the beginning in 1981, when there was a greenhouse on the property. Now she uses her backyard and porch. The plants are sold in the "Posey Patch" outside the Shoppe. in the last 15 years?
--> Did you know we have a "cookie lady?" Charlotte has baked
--> Emma makes our refrigerator towels and has been doing this for 10 years. She has made over 720 towels and is still going strong.
--> A group of ladies crochet 9 yd. strips of netting to make over 300 of our famous "scrubbies" each year.
--> Some of these same ladies, along with others, make clothing protectors (bibs) from towels. Approximately 400 clothing protectors are donated to the Nursing Home each year.

During the month of March 2011, we celebrated with special 30 percent (for 30 years) discounts, refreshments and prizes.

Thanks to all who have supported the Village Shoppe over the years and we look forward to visits from those who are just becoming aware of our little gem! Thanks be to God!

The Shoppe is open Monday through Saturday, 1:00 - 4:00 PM (we are closed the month of August). We are located at 1530 Haven Drive in Oviedo, right across from the Nursing Home and ALF.
